Disclaimer
FishTale is a social platform for sharing your catches. The information on it comes mostly from other anglers, so it's helpful for inspiration but isn't authoritative. Use it with the same healthy scepticism you'd apply to a yarn at the boat ramp.
Catch data is user-submitted
Species names, weights, lengths, locations, and catch dates are entered by users. We run automated checks on uploaded images and video frames to catch obvious abuse, but we do not independently verify whether the fish in any post is the species, weight, or length the user claims, or whether it was caught where or when they say.
Fishing rules and regulations
Any rules, catch limits, season information, or method restrictions mentioned in FishTale, our Community Guidelines, or our Acceptable Use Policyare summaries provided for convenience. The official rules in New Zealand are published by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) for saltwater species and Fish & Game New Zealand for freshwater. Always check the official sources for the jurisdiction where you fish.
Location data
Catches may include a location, sometimes hidden by the user. Even when visible, locations are entered by the user and may be approximate, inaccurate, or out of date. Don't use FishTale as a navigation or safety tool.
Gear tags and recommendations
Gear mentioned in a user's post or bio is that user's personal choice, not a recommendation from us. If we ever introduce a sponsored or affiliate gear feature, those links will be clearly marked as such.
Personal bests, badges, and gamification
XP, levels, badges, personal bests, and species collection are intended for fun. They have no monetary or competitive value, can be reset or adjusted by us in response to abuse, and don't represent any kind of certified record.
Automated moderation
We use automated systems (including Google Cloud Vision AI) to scan uploaded images and a sample of video frames. These systems make mistakes — they will sometimes flag content that is fine, and may occasionally let through content that isn't. We treat their output as a signal for human review, not as a final verdict. If a moderation decision affects you, you can request human review by emailing support@fishtale.app.
No professional advice
Nothing on FishTale constitutes professional, legal, medical, financial, or safety advice. If your decision matters, consult an actual expert.
Your safety on the water
Fishing involves risk. Wear a lifejacket. Tell someone where you're going. Check the weather with an official forecast (MetService in New Zealand or your local equivalent). Don't copy reckless behaviour you see in someone's post just because they made it look fun.
